You had a stretch of better days. You started, carefully, to believe in them. And then this morning arrived and your body was back somewhere you thought you had left.
The pain is one thing. The discouragement is heavier. It carries a question underneath it: was any of that real, or was I fooling myself?
It was real. I have watched enough recoveries to say that with some confidence. Progress in a living body does not travel in a straight line — it moves the way weather moves through a season. A cold week in spring does not mean spring was imagined.
A step back is not the erasing of the steps forward. It is the shape healing actually has.
What I notice, over months rather than days, is that the hard stretches often become shorter, or slightly less steep, or easier to recover from. Almost nobody sees that while it is happening. It shows up later, in hindsight, in some ordinary sentence like: that would have taken me two weeks last year.
So if today took something from you, I understand the disappointment completely. I would just ask you not to file it as proof. It is one day inside something much longer.
The better days were real. They will come back around. — Tammie
