For The Days You Feel Like Giving Up

This letter is for the evening when you are not looking for encouragement. You are just looking for someone who won’t flinch when you say how bad it has been.

I want to be careful here, because this is the moment where most people get handed something cheerful, and cheerful can feel like being pushed further away.

So I will simply say what I believe: giving up, on a night like this, usually does not mean giving up on your life. It means you are exhausted from carrying something for a long time without enough help, and the part of you that keeps organizing the effort has finally set the bag down in the hallway.

That is not weakness. That is what happens to anyone who carries a heavy thing far enough.

I have known people who set the bag down for a week. A season. Longer. And what surprised them was that healing did not punish them for it. Bodies are not keeping score the way we imagine. There is no ledger where the days you could not try are recorded against you.

You are allowed to stop trying for tonight. Tonight is not the whole story.

If you can, let the goal for the next few hours be very small. Warmth. Water. A softer chair. One phone call, or deliberately no phone calls. Nothing that requires you to be hopeful.

Hope has a way of coming back on its own once a person is rested enough to notice it. It rarely arrives when we go looking for it at eleven at night.

And if all you do between now and morning is stay — that counts. It has always counted.

I’m glad you’re still here. — Tammie

If this letter helped you feel a little less alone today… carry that feeling with you.

Whenever you’re ready

If you’d like to stay a little longer

Three quiet doors, and no obligation to open any of them tonight.
