Damage is tissue that has been harmed. Protection is a body guarding an area it believes could be harmed. They can produce nearly the same sensation, which is why the distinction is so rarely explained.
Damage tends to follow an event, settles as tissue heals, and behaves fairly predictably. Protection tends to linger, respond to stress and sleep, and vary in ways that seem to make no sense.
Knowing which one you are living with changes what makes sense to do next. You cannot reason with damage; it needs time and the right conditions. Protection, on the other hand, responds to safety.
Most long-standing symptoms carry a little of both. Naming the difference is where the fear usually starts to loosen.
